I was working on a book in my room with a/c because my studio is filled with mosquitoes and I am now freakishly afraid of them since I recently contacted Dengue Fever by one of them. Every time I see one I scream as if a T-Rex just entered the room and run out to get some bug spray.
Anyways, as I was saying, I was working on a book on my bed when I suddenly had a huge craving for chocolate. Went to the kitchen and found none. Looked in my secret places where I usually hide them and nothing. I decided I will let that go, but just couldn’t get the chocolate out of my head.
Twetted about it with my lovely friends, that by the way you should follow them on twitter because they are awesome (NVCrittenden, andibutler, tinekemeirink. JannieHo, Jessica_Lopez and GaiaBordicchia), until I realized it was no use. I had to go get me some chocolate.
As I’m driving to the store, I’m thinking how I should be working on the book instead of going out to look for real fatty snacks that make my soul happy but my hips not so much and then suddenly I get a hint of an idea for one of the spreads I was struggling about 10 minutes ago.
I get to the store and buy 3, um I mean 1 bar of chocolate and drive back home again. I tried to get back to my previous vision when a Mamma Mia song starts playing. It’s the one where the three dads and the girl are in the boat. I start picturing that scene and then my mind shifts to the two hunky actors. If I had to pick one, who would it be? Colin Firth definitely! There is only one Mr. Darcy and he is it. But Pierce Brosnan looks better than ever now that he is older because he is not so skinny and I love his grey hairs and all. And then I think who the heck that third dad was? Anyways..
My mind then shifts to the scene where the girl dives in the water and I think to myself, actors really must have knowledge of a lot of stuff in order to do movies. You know what I mean? They have to be prepared for basic things like do a cartwheel, blow a really big bubble gum bubble or dive.. all of which I can’t do. Seriously.
I realized if I was her in that movie and the director yelled “action” I would throw myself in the water like a cannon ball because I wouldn’t be able to dive.
Then I pictured myself being interviewed on a TV show and like those actors that say, “I prepared for that part in martial arts for many months” or “ I had a language specialist teach me to speak Japanese during the making of the film” I would say I had a personal trainer that taught me how to dive?! What a looser..
And then my mind shifted to how lovely the coast of Greece looks in that movie and that I would love to go there someday. And I pictured me in a white dress, sitting in a balcony of one of those white houses with beautiful red flowers sketching away while drinking a glass of red wine. Then I thought how dangerous to drink red wine wearing a white dress so I switched to white wine.
That reminded me that I should be sketching in my a/c room instead of in the coast of Greece so I got out of the car and as I was opening the door of my house my vision came back and this time very clearly! I ran upstairs and turned the a/c back on, grabbed my sketch table, pencil, eraser, chocolate (yes!) and sketched away.
Moral of the story, if you have a craving for chocolate by all means go look for some. :o)

Great advice! I try to always have some stashed somewhere but when I don't, it's all I can think about. Now that I know it really does help with art, there will be no excuse for not having it around!
This story is an illustration in itself!! I'm so happy you got some chocolate finally! What did you get? I need some now too! Best wishes with your vision!!
a : )
This was so fantastic! I just love it! Alicia, you are so wonderful!! (and so right about Colin Firth) Glad you had such a fruitful inspirational and chocolate filled journey tonight! Viva la chocolate!!!
Great, great post!!! I love it. I'm happy that someone else's mind rambles like that. I really enjoyed this and totally agree about Colin Firth!

I do too Jessica. I stash chocolate away all the time. :o)

Hi Laura! Oh my mind works like that all the time. I tell you there is a lot of crazy going on in there sometimes, LOL.
Kim!! Yes, chocolate is good for everything, for inspiration and for the soul. :o)
Words to live by... chocolate GOOD for the artist and the tummy. ;)
Ha! This is hilarious! What your mind thinks seems crazy when you write it all down.
oh Alicia, What a relief!! I am normal- I have this type of "stream of conscienceness" daydreaming issue all the time. It is not procrastination if it ends up solving a creative roadblock right?!!(wink)
At least that is what I tell myself while indulging on my chocolate(that is...if the kids haven't gotten into my secret stash!- sneeky little ones)
This is totally hilarious! Sigh, sounds like most of my days. And so is life as a freelancer...we can be a little nutty sometimes but girl I know chocolate ALWAYS helps! haha!
I am so happy that you wrote this and gave us a glimpse into your delightful interior landscape.Thank you!
It seems as tho I am the only person, artist certainly, who doesn't like chocolate but I have been driven to seek the perfect wedge of cheese or lemons at ungodly hours.
Comforted to know that I'm normal!
You are hysterical!! You are killing me! The read like an excerpt from my life. Seriously, every bit sounds like something that I have done, and/or will do again in the future. I love that you shared this Ali! (And I totally agree, DO NOT FIGHT THE CHOCOLATE URGE!!). :)
True words Lisa!
haha I guess you are right Woody! I've known all along I'm kind of nuts anyways, written or not. :o)
Glad to know I have company Suzanne!! Yes.. yes, it's not procrastination if it ends up solving a creative roadblock of course! ;o)
Thanks Jannie! That's why we need to make sure to never run out! :o)
Glad you enjoyed it Wendy. You don't like chocolate huh? You don't. Really? Not a little bit? Not dark, milk, or white? And with nuts? Sorry.. my mind is not comprehending very much. lol
Just kidding.. I have a couple of friends who don't like it either. The important thing is to find other sources of inspiration like cheese or lemons, hee!
Haha, glad we are so much alike Michelle. OK. I will not fight the chocolate urge! :o)
It seems like we're all in agreement: chocolate (and in my case, dark chocolate) is ALWAYS a good idea!
And I also think there's only one Mr. Darcy :-)
Haha... but now you mention it, I REALLy want some chocolate, and all the shops are closed, and I don't have any secreted away :o(
You do realise I will be thinking about chocolate all night now!
Help!
I love dark too Mon.. and milk, and with nuts, and Nutella. ;o)
But I don't like chocolate with fruit in it or alcohol. Yuck! Who thought of that?!
Oh no June.. I know the feeling. Hope you were able to find some! :)
Excellent! I'll go have that chocolate in my secret stash!!
I hopped online to distract myself so I wouldn't eat it and then I find your blog... ah well..can't fight the chocolate cravings!
And I totally agree - there's only one Mr Darcy...
