Hello.. someone out there.. are you with me?

Who wants to join us?

I'm calling out to all you out there to come and join me and Gina on a challenging exercise. Gina Perry is a wonderful illustrator who came back from her last conference all charged and inspired. This is what she had to say:

"During Laurie Halse Anderson's keynote at the 2008 NESCBWI conference last weekend, she gave us a challenge. Think you don't have time? She does. At least 15 minutes. Pick a time of day and mark it in your dayplanner or calender. She mentioned that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Also, pick a buddy or two to help you stay focused and on track. I challenge all of you who read this to join me."

So.. what do you think huh? Want to join us? She already started but I'm going to join her anyways. It doesn't matter if you don't post about it one day, not a big deal, the idea is to force ourselves to do something on a regular basis for at least 15 minutes a day, for 21 days... to challenge us to be creative, think outside the box. To experiment with new things, subjects, materials.

This is what I'm thinking, I'll start first with the exercise of drawing and sketching things I don't usually do. If you see my sketchbook is full of cuddly and soft characters, usually bunnies, dogs, cats, etc... So I'll start my excersise working on subjects I never do, like for example bugs. I never draw bugs.. don't know why really.

After that I might try and work on sketching at different and odd perspectives. I think I need to challenge myself there. From high above, really down below or from a character's point of view.

Another one will be to try different mediums. I love my watercolors and will stick to them loyaly. But I want to try out different things like pastels, acrylics, gouache but always trying to mantain my style.

After this I'll think of something else. But I find this opportunity to be a challenging one and if we are together on this then even better. Who cares if we screw up, we are just playing around and having fun together, right?

If you feel you want to join us, leave a comment saying so and I'll link you to Gina's blog and I'll post the people that joined on the sidebar so that it will be easier to visit all.

I will be starting tomorrow, but you can join us any day.

Come on then, pick up your pencil, pen, brush, mouse or whatever it is you like to sketch with and let's dare to be different!!

I'll join! I have sort of been doing this already by trying to draw and post every day, which I started in February. I don't post everything I draw, but I do try to draw or paint something every day, even if it is not deemed "post-worthy". :) Anyway, count me in!

Hooray! I'll add you into my blog post today. I like your thoughts on drawing things you might not normally draw too. I'll have to break my 'no internet'ing for a week' rule to check back!

Great Kate!! I knew you'll be in ;o)
That's wonderful... I'll link you to Gina and also put your link in my side bar. I'm glad you are in :o)

Hi Gina, great! Sorry for making you "break" your internet rule.. oops ;op

Sure, I'll play! Like Kate, I kind of do this every day already, either drawing or writing. I might not post about it every day, but could do at least a once a week roundup... would that still count? (I promise I won't cheat!) :-)

And hi, Gina-- I guess we didn't meet at the conference, but nice to bump into you here! Laurie's talk was great, no? I never considered a tattoo before, but now she's got me thinking... ;-)

Funny, I was actually going to do something like this for a week, just to get myself drawing more. Count me in. Any practice is good.

Like the others, I do try to draw everyday. But, dang this day job and deadlines!

Hi Alicia--
This sounds like a wonderful idea. I'd like to join as well, though I'm not sure I can post everyday. I'll definitely try, because I have been trying to be more productive and to find those 15 minutes to practice everyday (as Tom said below, dang this day job!)

I guess the hard thing is to post work that does not look that great, but in theory the more you do the better you become, right?

I'll get started this weekend!

Count me in! I'm terrible at doing something every day - I keep telling myself I should - but I'll make an effort for 21 days if I know all you guys are along for the ride !

Alicia Padrón said...

Buenísimo Paola!! Te agrego a la lista :o)

RyanLoghry said...

I'd like to try this too. I sketch every day, but if it's not for a project, I have no focus, and just draw whatever.

I'm not sure how to add lists of links in my blog though. Can someone advise me on this?

Alicia Padrón said...

Hi Ryan! Great I'll add you t the list :o)

Well for adding a list of links this is what you can do. Go to "customize" your blog, then click on the" add an element" on your side bar. One the new window of options, look for "add a list of link"s. The just start adding the link address and the name of the link, one by one, and thats it. A list should appear on your side bar. Let me know if you need more help.

Alicia Padrón said...

Hi Ryan, just visited you blog and saw you already have a list of links. Sorry, i thought you needed help with that, didn't understand you question. So I guess what you are asking is how to connect all the people together.. no? The best way I thought of was to do a section on my sidebar just about this exercise.

RyanLoghry said...

You were right Alicia, I was asking about adding a list. I haven't added a list since I started my blog last year, and didn't remember how. Thanks for your help!
